WEBPAGE entry V. A. R. P. A. -------------- V.A.R.P.A. is short for Victoria Amateur Radio Packet Association. The Association was formed from the desires of a small group of amateurs interested in furthering their knowlege in computers and radio. Now the numbers have grown to over 70 and have been holding constant for some time now. V.A.R.P.A. is an informal gathering of amateurs who give financial and moral support to keep a club BBS and it's associated equipment going. In return, some packet specialists assist other amateurs by holding seminars at each meeting usually held on the last Sunday of each month (excluding statutory holidays). As mentioned previously, it is an informal organization consisting of an appointed executive comprising of a President (Glenn Terrell VE7GCT), a treasurer (Paul Johnson VE7DHM) and a secretary (Larry Joe VE7DIE). Paul looks after membership details, mailing, and other monetary matters. Larry looks after the creation and publication of the monthly newsletters and the Packet Survival Guide, as well as hosting the monthly technical seminars. Glenn co-ordinates the general activities and assists in some technical aspects of the seminars. The latest Packet Survival Guide is a reference manual edited by VE7DIE and donated to VARPA to distribute to all members without charge. For those who wish a copy, it is strongly suggested that you join VARPA to get the best benefits of the free survival guide as well as the monthly newsletter as the 200+ page survival guide is $25.00 alone without membership. The guide covers many topics for the beginner right up to the expert user. Funds that are collected are set aside for copying, mailing and general system upgrade and maintenance. The membership fee is $30 for Canadian addresses, $34 for continental USA, $38.50 for all other locations. The above prices have been in effect since 1990 without change.
